Synergy

•May 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems, each with its own display, without special hardware. It’s intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own monitor(s). Redirecting the mouse and keyboard is as simple as moving the mouse off the edge of your screen. Synergy also merges the clipboards of all the systems into one, allowing cut-and-paste between systems. Furthermore, it synchronizes screen savers so they all start and stop together and, if screen locking is enabled, only one screen requires a password to unlock them all.

Virtual Box

•May 16, 2008 • Leave a Comment

VirtualBox is a general-purpose full virtualizer for x86 hardware. Targeted at server, desktop and embedded use, it is now the only professional-quality virtualization solution that is also Open Source Software. Some of the features of VirtualBox are: Modularity. VirtualBox has an extremely modular design with well-defined internal programming interfaces and a client/server design. This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don’t have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox. Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers. Guest Additions for Windows and Linux. VirtualBox has special software that can be installed inside Windows and Linux virtual machines to improve performance and make integration much more seamless. Among the features provided by these Guest Additions are mouse pointer integration and arbitrary screen solutions (e.g. by resizing the guest window). Shared folders. Like many other virtualization solutions, for easy data exchange between hosts and guests, VirtualBox allows for declaring certain host directories as “shared folders”, which can then be accessed from within virtual machines

WideURL

There are plenty of services out there that will take a long URL and make it shorter so that you can fit it in an email, IM or Twitter message. But sometimes you don’t want your URL to be shorter and easier to read or remember. Sometimes you want it to be as long as humanly possible. Don’t ask us when you would want that, just take our word for it. Fortunately, there’s a service that can help.

W-i-d-e-U-R-L will take your relatively short and easy to remember URL and lengthen it by essentially spelling it out. For example, http://www.downloadsquad.com becomes that behemoth you see above. But wait, there’s more! Is that super-long URL a bit too much to remember? No problem, W-i-d-e-U-R-L features TinyURL integration, which lets you quickly condense any freshly created URL, thus closing an entirely pointless circle.

WideURL

Yeah, I took that from DownloadSquad, big deal.

WildRename

•April 30, 2008 • Leave a Comment

While Windows lets you rename multiple files at once by selecting a group of documents with your mouse and clicking rename, you don’t have a lot of control over the process. What if you want each file to keep its original name, but you want to add a prefix. Or what if you want to change all of the characters from upper case to lower case? Windows doesn’t give you that option, but the free Windows utility WildRename does.

WildRename comes in a small, executable package, meaning you there’s nothing to install on your PC, and you can even run the application from a USB flash drive. Once it’s up and running you can navigate to the directory of your choice and select from a list of possible actions to perform, including:

  • Changing the case
  • Add or remove characters
  • Replace strings of characters
  • Add text counters to a series, such as _001

There’s also a handy simulation mode which lets you preview the changes before writing them to your actual documents.
