WideURL

There are plenty of services out there that will take a long URL and make it shorter so that you can fit it in an email, IM or Twitter message. But sometimes you don’t want your URL to be shorter and easier to read or remember. Sometimes you want it to be as long as humanly possible. Don’t ask us when you would want that, just take our word for it. Fortunately, there’s a service that can help.

W-i-d-e-U-R-L will take your relatively short and easy to remember URL and lengthen it by essentially spelling it out. For example, http://www.downloadsquad.com becomes that behemoth you see above. But wait, there’s more! Is that super-long URL a bit too much to remember? No problem, W-i-d-e-U-R-L features TinyURL integration, which lets you quickly condense any freshly created URL, thus closing an entirely pointless circle.

Yeah, I took that from DownloadSquad, big deal.

WildRename

While Windows lets you rename multiple files at once by selecting a group of documents with your mouse and clicking rename, you don’t have a lot of control over the process. What if you want each file to keep its original name, but you want to add a prefix. Or what if you want to change all of the characters from upper case to lower case? Windows doesn’t give you that option, but the free Windows utility WildRename does.

WildRename comes in a small, executable package, meaning you there’s nothing to install on your PC, and you can even run the application from a USB flash drive. Once it’s up and running you can navigate to the directory of your choice and select from a list of possible actions to perform, including:

  • Changing the case
  • Add or remove characters
  • Replace strings of characters
  • Add text counters to a series, such as _001

There’s also a handy simulation mode which lets you preview the changes before writing them to your actual documents.

Trackmania Nations

Nadeo released TrackMania Nations partly as a promotion for the Electronic Sports World Cup, and also for TrackMania itself. This free, stand-alone game has one new environment, Stadium, and many features also in Sunrise, including the advertisement panels, which show ads from sponsors streamed from the internet. The game contains 100 single player tracks, the earlier ones relatively simple in both design and gameplay, but it is largely pitched as an online game. One of the main attractions is the leader board, in which people compete for the best times and points. The top 5 players can be seen on the homepage. Nations has earned an extremely high popularity (there were almost 1 million registered online players within weeks of its launch), in large part due to the wide accessibility of the freeware game.

I play this game a lot and if you like racing games, you will probably like this one.
